The Business Trip: The Meeting Is Only One Part of the Operation
A successful business trip is not merely a plane ticket and an energetic traveler.
- Drive clarifies why the trip exists, what decision must be made, and what result justifies the cost.
- Connect builds the relationship, creates interest, and helps people understand the opportunity.
- Sustain coordinates schedules, handoffs, workload at home, and the needs of people affected by the absence.
- Verify confirms reservations, identity documents, policies, costs, dependencies, and contingency details.
The trip can fail even when the meeting goes brilliantly. A customer promise may lack delivery capacity. A credential may not work. No one may cover an operational responsibility. Notes may remain in the traveler's memory. Expense or security requirements may be bypassed. The return handoff may never happen.
The BOS lesson
The visible event sits on invisible systems:
- Communication: Who needs what update, in what channel, and when?
- Information: Where are the itinerary, account context, decision notes, and current customer record?
- Security: How are devices, identities, access, and customer information protected?
- Operations: Who owns preparation, travel, meeting, promises, and follow-up?
- Continuity: What happens at home and if the traveler is delayed or unavailable?
- Control: Who can approve cost, commitment, exception, or access?
- Intelligence: What did the business learn, and what decision changes?
Business example
An owner attends a conference and returns with five promising partnerships. Connect created access and Drive wants movement. Before commitments become customer obligations:
- Record the proposition and source
- Verify terms and data/security implications
- Identify operational owner and capacity
- Define a reversible first experiment
- Set evidence and review date
- Decide which opportunities will deliberately not proceed
Try this
Choose a coming meeting, event, visit, or sales call. Create a “before / during / after” card:
Before: objective, authority, context, security, coverage.
During: decision, commitment, note owner, next step.
After: authoritative record, implementation owner, capacity check, follow-up date, lesson.
If the only name in every box is the owner, the trip has revealed a continuity and control dependency.
BOS links: all seven systems.
Misuse warning: Do not infer travel competence or relationship skill from a Connect score.
